Rereading old critiques

I've been rereading the comments that I wrote on the incredibly rough first draft of The Novel. A few choice bits:

"Is there a reason, besides sheer laziness on the author's part, that Oliver doesn't sound the slightest bit British? Because that's weird. And dumb. And sloppy."

"God preserve us all from authors who try to use tech speak in their writing and then realize they can't."

"Maybe you should actually find out what an RPG launcher looks like/weighs before including it. Even if it's integral to the plot."

"I hate this phrase." (this gets repeated an awful lot)

"Awww. They're so cute. Too bad they won't see each other for two years after this is over, and when they finally do all they'll do is argue and snit."

"Come on, this isn't Voldemort. You can refer to him by name."

"Why is his nose bandaged? Christopher punched him in the mouth."

I know it's lame to crack myself up with my own comments on my own writing. But being sarcastic does make the rewriting process much more entertaining.

the end of the summer approaches

Ugh, I've done a dreadful job keeping this blog up-to-date. I'm home now, spending most of my time on Zelda and the Watson Fellowship, but I've also begun working on a new story (instead of rewriting The Novel). Went to a bike race last night, which was good fun though a bit cold, and today looks like a lazy day at home unless I can drag my parents out to see Julie & Julia.

I've read a few excellent books lately; The Unlikely Disciple, by Kevin Roose, about his experience spending a semester at Liberty University; How To Win A Cosmic War, by the always brilliant Reza Aslan, about the so-called War on Terror, and The Tough Guide to Fantasyland, by Diana Wynne Jones, a tongue-in-cheek 'travel guide' to your typical epic fantasy. Highly recommend all three.

Back to fellowship applications and video games, I think. I can't wait for school to start!
